life could have turned out quite differently

well, not a starling of course.
but at least, say, a sparrow,
hunched in the wind
in the middle of an empty avenue
at night

not whistling, no, i'm no good,
but trembling at least and crying, -
simply because someone's decided
to bake you a nut cake,
make you a surprise.

soon the world will become
such that we won't be able to see it
soon i will become
such that no one will look at me

one could have been gentle
and strong
have been rich
and not fair

just that speech has turned out
the sort of wee thing
there's no use hiding from
while it's breathing

and it just keeps breathing
